Danny Reagan Returns! Donnie Wahlberg to Lead Blue Bloods Spinoff Set in Boston
Danny Reagan is back—but this time, he’s trading the streets of New York for the heart of Boston.
CBS officially announced on Tuesday, February 18, that Boston Blue (working title) has been ordered straight to series for the 2025-2026 broadcast season. The new show will serve as a spinoff to the long-running hit Blue Bloods, bringing back Donnie Wahlberg as fan-favorite detective Danny Reagan.
According to the network, the series will follow Danny as he transitions from the NYPD to a new role within the Boston Police Department. While details about his position remain under wraps, the move signals a fresh start for the character—though whether any of his Blue Bloods family members will make an appearance remains unknown.
The Creative Team & What’s Next
Boston Blue is set to be helmed by showrunners and executive producers Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, with legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg himself also on board as executive producers.
Though CBS has yet to confirm additional casting details, the possibility of familiar faces from Blue Bloods making guest appearances remains a hot topic of speculation.
From Blue Bloods to a New Beginning
Wahlberg, 55, portrayed Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods for 14 seasons, from its debut in 2010 until its series finale in December 2024. The original show centered around the Reagan family, led by NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and his father, former commissioner Henry Reagan (Len Cariou).
Danny, the eldest surviving Reagan sibling, worked as a detective while raising his two sons after the death of his wife, Linda. Throughout the series, he developed a close bond with his partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), leading to lingering questions about whether their professional relationship could turn romantic.
The Blue Bloods finale left Danny’s future wide open. In one of the final moments, his grandfather Henry encouraged him to find someone to share his life with, prompting Danny to ask Baez out for pizza. The scene left fans wondering if a romance was finally on the horizon.
Wahlberg’s Hints at a Spinoff Become Reality
In December 2024, Wahlberg teased that Danny and Baez’s final scene “stood in the doorway of possibility.” He expressed his appreciation for their evolving dynamic, noting that the deep respect between them didn’t necessarily need to turn into romance—but the possibility remained.
When asked about a Blue Bloods spinoff at the time, Wahlberg played coy, saying, “I love the character, and I certainly thought there were more stories that we could tell with him. I’m not saying there will be a spinoff, I’m just saying I haven’t closed the door on the character.”
Clearly, that door was left wide open.
CBS Studios president David Stapf had also hinted in July 2024 that the network was taking its time developing a continuation of the Blue Bloods universe. “We’ve got to get it right,” he said. Now, with Boston Blue officially greenlit, it seems CBS has found the right formula.
What’s Next for Danny Reagan?
As fans eagerly await Boston Blue, questions remain:
- Why is Danny leaving New York? Did something happen within the NYPD that forced a fresh start, or is this move personal?
- Will Baez or any of the Reagan family members visit him in Boston? With so much history in New York, it’s hard to imagine Danny completely cutting ties with his past.
- Will the show explore Danny’s personal life more deeply? With his family’s encouragement to open his heart again, could romance finally be in the cards?
While details are still emerging, one thing is certain: Danny Reagan’s story is far from over.
